Manchester Laser NQ is offering 50% off tattoo removal for any Harry Potter-themed inkings, in response to JK Rowling’s critical views on transgender rights.

Manager El told Attitude: “As soon as I decided to start my laser tattoo removal business, I knew I wanted to offer this discount. The way JK Rowling has campaigned against and damaged the the rights of trans women in this country, and across the world, is absolutely disgusting.

“Like many queer people, I loved Harry Potter when I was younger and it only lost its magic because of the woman who wrote it. I know there are a lot of people walking around with HP tattoos that they no longer want or even feel ashamed of having now and I just wanted to make it a bit easier for people to get them removed.”

“TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS” – Manchester Laser NQ

The team – based inside tattoo parlour The Old Volt – first announced the offer on Instagram last month, writing: “Around 16% of people regret getting a tattoo, less than 1% of people regret gender affirming surgery and 100% of queer people regret their Harry Potter tattoos (last stat not fact checked).

“I hate JK Rowling and everything she has done to try and degrade the rights of trans people. I know a lot of us grew up loving Harry Potter and it has now been ruined by her using the profits to fund her anti-trans agenda.

“So I will be offering 50% off removal of any Harry Potter themed tattoos, for anyone! TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS.”

Rowling’s views on transgender rights have sparked widespread backlash since 2018, when she liked a tweet referring to trans women as “men in dresses”.

In 2020, she published a lengthy essay arguing that the transgender “movement” causes “demonstrable harm” to cisgender women and criticised the idea that “any man who believes or feels he’s a woman” should be legally recognised as such.

She has repeatedly emphasised “sex-based rights” and expressed skepticism toward gender identity language, which many critics – including LGBTQ+ advocates and Harry Potter cast members – have labelled transphobic.

Her comments have led to boycotts, public condemnation from stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, and a growing movement among fans to distance themselves from the franchise.
