Former AFL player Mitch Brown is breaking barriers as the first openly bisexual Australian footballer. Since coming out in 2025, he has spoken candidly about bi-erasure, both within and outside the LGBTQ+ community. Brown uses his platform to challenge hyper-masculine sporting norms and advocate for greater inclusivity in sport. As leader of the Sport category for Attitude 101, empowered by Bentley, he inspires his two children, and others, to embrace their identities without fear. American professional basketball player Jason Collins made history in 2013 as the first openly gay athlete in any of North America’s four major men’s professional team sports leagues. Standing seven feet tall and known for his defensive presence, Collins played centre for seven NBA teams, including the New Jersey Nets and Boston Celtics. After coming out publicly, he returned to the court in 2014 with the Brooklyn Nets. Fleur Cousens

In 2015, Fleur Cousens created Goal Diggers FC (GDFC), a football team for women and non-binary players, to challenge the idea that it is a “man’s game”. At a time when trans rights face global attack and the definition of womanhood excludes many trans people, Cousens has built a football space that is fully accessible regardless of experience or ability. Instead, Goal Diggers FC prioritises participation, community and belonging over competition. By leading this trans-inclusive team and highlighting LGBTQ+ visibility in sport, Cousens has become a powerful role model for inclusion in football.

During the 2024 Paris Olympics, he came out as bisexual, and in November that year he announced his engagement to Jetten on Instagram.
