JoJo Siwa has addressed claims that she is straying away from the LGBTQ+ community since dating Love Island alum Chris Hughes, revealing difficult interactions with fans.
Siwa and Hughes hit it off in the Celebrity Big Brother house in April 2025, leading the pop star to break up with her non-binary partner, Kath Ebbs, shortly after leaving the show.
She has been dating the reality TV star since June this year, though she admits the reception from the LGBTQ+ community has not always been welcoming.
“I will fight for the queer community until it’s over” – JoJo Siwa on her stance on the LGBTQ+ community now she is in a relationship with Chris Hughes
In a new CNN interview on Saturday (25 October), Siwa said, “I will fight for the queer community until it’s over. It’s my people,” when asked if she’s distancing herself from the LGBTQ+ community.
Making her red carpet debut with Hughes at the Dancers Against Cancer Gala in Beverly Hills, she added, “I will always make everyone around me know that they’re accepted for who they are.”
She continued: “The people who are criticising me for saying that I’m moving away from the queer community, which literally is not possible for me to do, those people are not doing the same for me.”
“I almost shell up really quick” – Siwa when she meets someone from the LGBTQ+ community
This is not the first time Siwa has been questioned about her sexuality amid her new relationship. Speaking on SiriusXM’s Smith Sisters Live in September, she addressed rumours that she was straight.
“Just because I’m in a hetero relationship does not mean I’m straight. And okay, just say all of a sudden I said, ‘yeah, I’m straight’. Awesome. Who cares? Beautiful. I’m still an ally then,” she said.
Now, the reception she receives from the community can go one of two ways. Speaking on the red carpet, she said, “Now when I meet somebody that is very clearly a member of the queer community, I almost shell up really quick.”
“I don’t know if they’re going to be kind or if they are going to be ruthless” – Siwa on the reception from the LGBTQ+ community since dating Hughes
She added, “I don’t know if they’re going to be kind or if they are going to be ruthless. I’ve had both experiences, and I’m okay with both, but I’m just learning to protect myself.”
The pair attended the awards show together on Tuesday (21 October) and were photographed while Hughes kissed her cheek posing for pictures.
At the Gala, Siwa was presented with the Humanitarian Award and became so emotional she struggled to speak, with her boyfriend stepping onto the stage to comfort her.
Siwa has previously hinted at filming a reality TV series with Hughes, expected to take a fly-on-the-wall, documentary-style approach giving an insight into their relationship.
While the broadcaster has not been officially confirmed, ITV2 is rumoured to be behind the show. Siwa confirmed the series in an interview with BuzzFeed UK earlier this year.
