Iris Prize opening night film Cardiff gets brand new trailer

A new trailer for Cardiff, one of the short films launching this year’s Iris Prize LGBTQ Film Festival has been unveiled.

The film is directed by previous iris Prize winner Sarah Smith and written by Phillip Guttmann sees one man shoved into an uncomfortable-sounding journey by his mother. 

The short film stars Richard Elis, Ruth Madoc, and Stifyn Parri, known for his role in UK TV’s first gay kiss in Brookside in the mid-1980s.

A synopsis for the film reads: “Perpetually single, Frederick envies his fabulous gay friend Joe, who seems to have a never-ending supply of paramours despite being happily married himself.

“But when Frederick’s meddling mother arrives for a visit, she thrusts him into a forbidden romance, and a series of unforeseen betrayals hilariously expose some carefully held secrets.”

As well as hinting at some of the drama within the film the trailer also shows off the Welsh capital with its famous arcades, the Principality Stadium, and Cardiff Castle. 

Cardiff has been announced as one of the films set to premiere at this year’s Iris Prize LGBTQ film festival based in the Welsh capital. 

It will be played alongside, Blooming, I Shall be Whiter than Snow, Queens Cwm Rag, Sally Leapt Out Of A Window Last Night, and G♭

All of these films have been made in Wales, and four have been directed by women. 

Iris returns for the first time in person since 2019 and runs from 11-16 October.
