Watch: Hilarious spoof of anti-gay ‘Not Alone’ commercial

By Nick Bond

Last week, US organisation Catholicvote posted a video to their YouTube channel telling those against marriage equality that they are “not alone.”

It was largely pointless – full US marriage equality passed just a couple of days later (soz babes) – but it was still hard not to get a little worked up over the video, which showed everyday bigots opining about how marginalised and oppressed they feel when they express their view that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

A few even pull out the old “And I’ve got gay friends” card. Bet your gay pals must love you, guys. The video’s racked up more than half a million views, but the largely negative YouTube comments show that for most viewers, a groan and an eye roll was the response.

The whole thing might already seem beyond parody, but thankfully YouTube comedian Soundly Awake was up to the challenge, posting a shot-for-shot remake of the original video with a rewritten script highlighting just how ridiculous the original whiny ‘poor me’ arguments sound. Just imagine complaining that society is making you feel uncomfortable about discriminating against women? Or black people? To quote one highlight:

“Nobody’s view should be suppressed. Especially if they oppress marginalised groups of people. Those are my favourites!”
