Vin Diesel says ‘Fast & Furious’ co-star Luke Evans would make a ‘great’ Bond

By Will Stroude

Spectre

might not hit screens until Monday (October 26), but with reports that Daniel Craig’s fourth outing as James Bond will likely be his last, attention is already turning to the question of who’ll step into the iconic character’s shoes next time around.

Idris Elba has been the popular name to fling around so far, but while promoting his new movie The Last Witch Hunter, Vin Diesel has put forward a recommendation of his own: Welsh Fast and Furious co-star Luke Evans.

Asked by DigitalSpy whether the petrol-head franchise had ever considered bringing a Bond actor aboard, the 38-year-old replied that Evans – who came out as gay back in 2002 – was close to embodying the character in the films, in which he portrays ex-SAS criminal mastermind Owen Shaw.

“Well Luke Evans, to me, was a very Bond-like actor”, Diesel said.

“I think he’d amke a great Bond. He brought a lot of that to Fast and Furious.”

Evans – who has starred in the Hobbit films and is set to play Gaston in Disney’s live action re-working of Beauty and the Beast opposite Emma Watson – first publicly acknowledged his sexuality in an early noughties interview with The Advocate, but has remained coy about discussing the topic since breaking Hollywood over the last five years.

“Everybody knew me as a gay man, and in my life in London I never tried to hide it,” he said at the time, adding that he didn’t want to have “that skeleton in the closet they can rattle out”.

As for us, we definitely like the sound of a hunky gay leading man man playing Bond – and even more so after former series star Pierce Brosnan recently admitted that while making the actual characer gay would make for “interesting viewing”, series’ producer Barbara Brocolli would never allow it to happen in her lifetime – click here to find out more.
