Tom Daley reveals details of his proposal to Dustin Lance Black
By Will Stroude

They’ve been fairly quiet since announcing their engagement in the Births, Deaths and Marriages section of The Times six weeks ago, but Tom Daley has finally shed some more light on how he proposed to Dustin Lance Black back in September.
In an interview with ES Magazine, to be published tomorrow (November 12), the 21-year-old reveals that he spent months trying to find the perfect opportunity to propose to his partner of over two years, before eventually deciding to do it in the intimate setting of Black’s home in Hollywood.
Daley had previously implied it was him that had proposed when he shared a picture of the pair’s engagement rings last month, along with the caption: “#HeSaidYES and then ISaidYES”, and has now revealed that while he was the first to pop the question, there was a twist: the Oscar-winning screenwriter had already bought a ring ready to ask him too.
“I took the ring with me from London”, Daley says of his trip to Black’s home to propose. “Lance was surprised, but then he went and got the ring he’d bought for me.”
The Olympic diver – who described his engagement to Black as a “dream come true” after the news was revealed last month – also reiterates his mum’s comments that they couple won’t be thinking about wedding day plans until after the Rio Olympics next summer, and revealed that Black is taking a cute stand of solidarity with his training regime until then.
“We haven’t thought about anything, not even the cake…” he says. “My boyfriend isn’t drinking until after Rio, with me.”
Tom also make a sweet admission about the early days of the couple’s relationship back in 2013, which began after he left a note in Lance’s phone telling him to call him.
“We started talking and that was it” he says, adding: “I was nervous at the beginning – can you do an emoji, how many kisses, or none?”
Meanwhile, Dustin recently discussed his hopes to start a family – something he says he didn’t think he’d ever “be able to do”. Click here to find out more.
