The fight for US equal marriage is being made into a movie

By Will Stroude

It’s been less than two week’s since the US Supreme Court’s ruling which legalised equal marriage across all 50 states, but 20th Century Fox are already working on a film about the historic victory for LGBT rights.

The studio announced yesterday (July 7) that it had bought the life rights of Jim Obergefell, who was one of the lead plaintiff’ in the lawsuit which saw the court rule in favour of equality last month.

Fox has also secured the screen rights for an as-yet-unwritten book, entitled 21 Years to Midnight, by Mr Obergefell and journalist Debbie Cenziper about the landmark case, The New York Times reports.

Mr Obergefell began his legal battle following the death of his husband John Arthur. The couple had married outside their home state in one which allowed same-sex marriage, but after his husband’s death Mr Obergefell’s home state of Ohio refused to recognise the union and list him as Mr Arthur’s widower.

The upcoming movie will be helmed by The Fault in Our Stars producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Speaking after the announcement yesterday, Mr Godney described it as a “transcendent love story about someone who goes to such a length for love that he ends up changing the world.”

Still in the initial stages of development, it’s expected to be two years before the film hits screens. But that’ll give us just enough time to get fully stocked up on tissues.
