The Tales of the City revival is set to arrive on Netflix on June 7 and we have an exclusive featurette from behind the scenes.

The new revived series will pick up 20 years after Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) left 28 Barbary Lane, San Francisco, to pursue her career.

The TV adaptation of Tales of the City first aired in the UK in 1993 on Channel 4 (and the following year on PBS in the US), charting Mary-Anne’s journey as she moved to San Francisco and befriends the colourful fellow residents of 28 Barbary Lane.

Inspired by the books of Armistead Maupin, the series returned for two further instalments with 1998’s More Tales of the City and 2001’s Further Tales of the City, and the latest outing is set to pick up the story 20 years later, as Mary-Anne returns San Francisco once again after leaving the city behind to pursue her career.

Now, we have got hold of an exclusive featurette where we hear the returning cast – as well as newcomers like Ellen Page, Looking’s Murray Bartlett, Girls star Zosia Mamet, and RuPaul’s Drag Race season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen – discuss the show’s impact.

Laura Linney says: “People have been talking about bringing Tales back over the past 25 years but the reason for it being redone had to be in response to the world we are living in now.”

We also learn more about the upcoming revival and how it deals with minority groups having to deal with finding a new family in their communities.

We see guest star Jen Richards as young Anna Madrigal and Daniela Vega as her best friend Ysela from a flashback episode focused on Anna’s arrival to San Francisco.

The episode depicts 1966 San Francisco and the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, which marked the beginning of the transgender rights movement.
