Sir Elton John to write songs for Devil Wears Prada musical

By Will Stroude

Put down your cube of cheese and prepare your florals for spring, because Sir Elton John is writing the music for a planned stage version of The Devil Wears Prada.

The musical icon, who has previously composed numbers for musicals including Billy Elliot and The Lion King, will write the music for the new stage adaptation, while Paul Rudnick will write the story and lyrics.

The new musical is based on Lauren Weisberger best-selling 2003 novel, which was inspired by her time working as a fashion assistant for Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

The story was later immortalised in a 2006 film starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, who picked up an Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Actress’ for her performance as fearsome fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly.

In a statement, Sir Elton said: “I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”

The show’s producers paid tribute to the ‘Rocket Man’ singer in a statement, saying: “To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story.

“We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could think of only two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick.

“That’s all!”
