Sia: New single was written for Adele

By Shaun Kitchener

Sia has reportedly revealed that the first single from her new album should be with us by the end of the month.

This Is Acting, the reclusive artist’s seventh album, will seemingly kick off with the release of Alive on September 26. Given the whole industry shift to New Music Fridays, we wouldn’t be surprised if that turned out to be September 25 – which is less than three weeks away, people…

RTV Solvenija claims the track was written for Adele’s elusive third LP, but was ultimately cast aside. “The song I wrote together with Adele… but it was rejected at the last minute. It’s about [her] life, so I now sing a song from [her] perspective,” she explained.

This probably sets a precedent for the whole album, which she previously revealed would be made entirely of songs she wrote for other artists.

Explaining that last year’s 1000 Forms Of Fear only saw the light of day because of contractual obligations, she told NME in February: “I was planning to be a pop song writer for other artists. But my publishing deal was as an artist so I had to put one more album out. I didn’t want to get famous so I kept all the songs I wanted and had a lot of fun making it.”

It seems even the songs she wanted to give away were still appealing to her as a performer: “I have a full album ready to go and it’s much more pop. I’m calling it This Is Acting because they are songs I was writing for other people, so I didn’t go in thinking ‘this is something I would say’. It’s more like play-acting. It’s fun.”

She still has plenty of work for others coming out thick and fast, though: so far in 2015 alone she’s co-written two tracks for Carly Rae Jepsen’s heavily acclaimed E.MO.TION, two for Kelly Clarkson’s Billboard-topping Piece By Piece and also Jessie J’s Pitch Perfect 2 hit Flashlight.

Adele, meanwhile, is also thought to be releasing new music before the end of the year; nearly five years after 21.
