‘Sherlock’ series three nearly included gay club scene

TV Sherlock 4

A gay club scene nearly featured in the third series of Sherlock, the show’s stars have revealed.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman shot a scene set in a gay club for the second episode of series three, The Sign Of Three, during which Holmes and Watson embarked on a pub crawl for the latter’s stag party.

Speaking at a Q&A event at London’s Apple Store yesterday (February 4), Martin Freeman revealed: “Doing the drunk stuff was lovely but I regret there was one bit of that drunk stuff that was missing. There was the gay club scene. Why didn’t that get in? We got mullered in a gay club and all these topless guys were going by.”

Recalling the scene, co-star Cumberbatch added: “I had no idea why we were there and what it was and why they didn’t have their clothes on and then it dawned on me.”

Explaining why the scene didn’t make the final cut, Steven Moffat – who co-created the hit BBC One detective series with Mark Gatiss – cited time constraints, saying that some of the pub crawl footage was sliced because it went “on and on and on”.

Series three of Sherlock aired on BBC One last month (January) and each of three episodes attracted massive audiences of over 11 million viewers.
