Sam Smith has covered Whitney Houston’s classic 1986 hit How Will I Know.

Smith – who has just released the UK’s fastest-selling debut album of the year – turned the uptempo dance-pop track into an emotional ballad during a performance for US radio network SiriusXM. Give his version of How Will I Know a listen below.

“[How Will I Know is] a Whitney Houston song that makes me happy – it’s a feel-good song,” he told Rolling Stone recently.

“I love the juxtaposition of a melancholy lyric with an upbeat sound. People forget that’s how she rose to fame. The more mature Whitney, like I Will Always Love You, came later.”

Cambridgeshire-born Smith spoke candidly about his sexuality recently, revealing that his debut album In the Lonely Hour is inspired by his feelings of unrequited love for a man.
