Sam Smith talks pain and heartbreak as they tease ‘cathartic’ new album ‘Love Goes’

The singer's delayed third LP is almost here.

Sam Smith has spoken about the concept of their upcoming third stuido album Love Goes.

Basically, it’s going to be a break album – but with a dancey twist.

The star is known for singing about heartbreak on previous albums In the Lonely Hour (2014) and The Thrill of It All (2017).

Speaking on Capital Breakfast yesterday, Sam said: “The album’s more cathartic. Normally, on the album before, I would speak about love and I would really linger on the fact that I was in pain.

“Then, this album, it was more like ‘I’m heartbroken, but I need to get in the studio and I don’t want to talk about it. I just want to dance.’ We ended up dancing, then I’d talk about it through dancing a little bit.

“So it is kind of a break up album, but it’s more like shake them off, dance them away.”

Sam split with 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn in June 2018.

Speaking to Sunday Times Style about the break up later that year, Sam said: “Brandon was wonderful. I’m still trying to figure out what I took from that relationship and what it meant to me.

“It’s still quite raw. All my relationships have ended in a nice way, never nasty.”

Sam’s new album Love Goes is scheduled for release on 30 October.

It will contain the singles ‘To Die For’, ‘How Do You Sleep?’, ‘Fire On Fire’, ‘Dancing With a Stranger’ (with Normani), ‘Promises’ (with Calvin Harris), ‘I’m Ready’ (with Demi Lovato) and ‘My Oasis’ (featuring Burna Boy).

Confirming the album last week, Sam said on Instagram: “I’m extremely happy and overjoyed to announce my third album (I can’t believe I’m saying that) Love Goes. This album marks a time of experimentation and self discovery in my life. I wrote this from the age of 26-28 and it’s been one hell of a ride.

“I hope the people who listen to it enjoy it and love it like I have and do.”
