Sam Smith only artist to sell a million in UK & US this year

Sam Smith is the only artist to have sold one million albums in both the UK and the US this year, it has been revealed.

The soul singer’s debut album In The Lonely Hour passed the incredible milestone in both countries within 24-hours of each other on Wednesday (December 17).

“Officially sold one million copies of In The Lonely Hour! To say I am ecstatic is a huge understatement,” said Smith in a statement. “Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album.”

Ed Sheeran’s X is the only other album to pass the one million sales mark in the UK, while Taylor Swift’s 1989 is the only album to pass the milestone in the US.

Earlier this month, Smith unveiled a cover of festive classic Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmaswatch him perform the song here.

The singer also leads this year’s Grammy nominations, receiving six nods in total, including Album of the Year for his debut LP In The Lonely Hourread more here.
