By Josh Haggis

Sam Smith has opened up about being verbally and physically attacked for being gay.

Smith, who took home two BRIT Awards last month (February), has revealed that he was physically attacked in public because of his sexuality shortly after he first moved to London.

“When I moved to London I got punched in the neck walking back from work. It was definitely homophobic,” the singer told The Sun. “I was on the phone speaking quite loudly and had pink earphones on so it was pretty clear I was gay.”

Smith said he also experienced homophobia during his school years, saying that “a bunch of boys from a rival school would shout insults at me as I walked from my home to the train station.”

“I remember walking to the station getting ‘f*****’ shouted at me all the time. It was the most mortifying thing. Not so much for me. I knew these people were stupid, uneducated twats,” he added.

Meanwhile, Smith recently revealed plans to start an LGBT charity to help gay people who are struggling to come to terms with their sexuality – find out more here.
