Russia has cancelled plans to host its own ‘gay free’ alternative to the Eurovision Song Contest.
The country had been planning to relaunch Intervision Song Contest – which originally ran in the Soviet era between 1977 and 1980 – as a “family friendly” option.
However, the Russian news service Rusnovosti has confirmed that the show’s producers will not hold the event next month as planned, due to the current “political situation” in Russia.
However, they are still planning to host the contest in 2015.
Russia threatened to boycott this year’s Eurovision Song Contest over the participation of Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst, who went on to win the competition – read more here.
Later, Russian officials banned Wurst from holding a victory parade in the country in order to “respect morality in the education of the younger generation” – read more here.
