Ricky Martin throws support behind Clinton with ‘LGBT for Hillary’ group

As the hotly-anticipated US election year approaches, Ricky Martin has urged LGBT voters to back Democratic party’s front-runner and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The Latin music star and father of two – who has already publicly slammed the Republican party’s “racist and absurd” front-runner, billionaire business tycoon Donald Trump – announced the launch of a new ‘LGBT for Hillary’ group in a email to potential voters over the weekend, ahead of the party’s official nomination process in early 2016.
“Growing up in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, I never dreamed that I would one day be a proud, out gay father of two beautiful little boys, in a country where marriage equality was the law of the land. Now, that’s just an average day — that’s what real progress is,” Martin wrote.
“Hillary knows this, and she’s not going to stop fighting. But in order to protect and build on the progress we’ve made, we need to win this election.”
The 40-year-old urged supporters to join the LGBT initiative with a donation of at least $1 toward Clinton’s campaign.
While ‘LGBT for Hillary’ certainly sums up the message well, we’re not sure we enjoy it quite as much as the incredible ‘I’d Bottom for Hillary’ campaign dreamt up by a group of gay men in San Francisco earlier this year – click here to find out more.
Clinton has made LGBT issues a high priority in her presidential campaign and notably included a soon to be married same-sex couple in her campaign launch video.
Despite backing civil unions during her 2008 campaign and declaring that “gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights” at the United Nations in 2011, the 67-year-old only backed full marriage equality in 2013, leading some to criticise her support as opportunistic – something she sent up in a recent skit for Saturday Night Live.
Meanwhile, the gay couple who famously featured in Clinton’s campaign announcement video have since tied the know, and got a special message from the former First Lady to mark the occasion – click here to find out more.
