Producer teases details of Britney’s US television comeback

By Will Stroude

The producer of Jane the Virgin has teased the details of Britney’s eagerly-anticipated guest appearance later this year.

Britney’s previously announced turn in the US romantic comedy-drama series will mark the star’s first television outing since 2010, when she made a cameo appearance in a special Britney-themed episode of Glee.

Jane the Virgin stars Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva, a working, religious young Latina virgin woman who becomes pregnant after being artificially inseminated by mistake. The show, which currently airs on The CW, was named ‘Best Television Series’ in the Musical and Comedy category at last year’s Golden Globes.

Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told Entertainment Tonight that the legendary performer will play an “exaggerated version” of herself in episode five of season two, which is due to air in the autumn – and also hinted that the installment will also include music.

Urman added that the show’s writers have come up with a storyline where Spears plays the arch-nemesis of Jane’s father Rogelio – an idea which the Pretty Girls singer “loved”.

“[Rogelio] has sort of alluded to [their rivalry],” Urman explained. “In season one, it was just a coincidence, but when he was selling [the idea of] his own Las Vegas residency, he said, ‘It’s just like Britney Spears’ Las Vegas residency, but mine’s only one night.'”

“And so we always had it in the back of our minds, ” she continued. “They have this backstory that is going to be revealed of how they became nemesis-es – nemisi?! – and we’ll get into all of that.”

Raising the prospect of some of Britney’s back catalogue featuring in the episode, Urman teased: “It’s not a full musical but it has… How much can I give away without spoiling it?! It’s going to be fun! There is music in the episode, yes.”

Spears – who just picked up a Style Icon award at last week’s Teen Choice Awards – has previously made forays into acting in 2002 romantic drama CrossroadsWill & Grace in 2006, as well as a two-episode guest stint on How I Met Your Mother back in 2008.

Season 2 of Jane the Virgin premieres on October 12 on The CW in the US.
