Olly Alexander, Callum Scott Howells and It’s A Sin get 11 BAFTA nominations

It’s a Sin has been nominated for 11 BAFTAs, with Olly Alexander, Callum Scott Howells, and Omari Douglas getting acting noms. 

Russell T. Davies’ drama about a group of friends living through the Aids crisis in 1980s London became Channel 4’s most-binged series ever when it debuted last year.

One of the show’s most heart-wrenching moments – when Colin was diagnosed with HIV – has already been announced as a contender for Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment Award at the 2022 awards.

Olly Alexander, who played the show’s lead, Ritchie, is up for Leading Actor, while Callum Scott Howells, Omari Douglas, and David Carlyle are all up for Supporting Actor.

Posting on his Instagram stories this morning (Wednesday 30 March) Howells said: “thank you so, so much @bafta. I can’t even tell you how much this means to me.”

Lydia West is up for Leading Actress for her role as fan-favourite, Jill, Ritchie’s best friend. All five actors are nominated for the first time. 

The show itself is nominated for Mini-Series and Davies has been nominated for Writer: Drama. It’s a Sin has also been recognised in the Director: Fiction, Editing Fiction, Make-up & Hair Design, and Scripted Casting categories. 

It’s a Sin took home the Best New Drama award at the National Television Awards last September and also claimed the prize in the Limited Series category at the Royal Television Society Awards on Tuesday (29 March) Callum Scott Howells also took home the gong for Actor (Male) and Russell T. Davies as Writer – Drama.

Elsewhere at the BAFTAs, Netflix’s Sex Education has received five nominations, including Ncuti Gatwa’s in the Male Performance in a Comedy Programme category for his work as Eric. Aimee Lou Wood has been nominated for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme as well.
