Nick Jonas has said that he is “thrilled” to be playing a gay character.

The former Attitude cover star plays rookie fighter Nate in the Kingdom, which began airing in October in the US and has already been renewed for another two seasons.

His character’s sexuality was revealed in the show’s first season finale earlier this month (December), which saw him being rejected entry to a gay club before drunkenly engaging in a sex act with another man. Watch the risqué scene here.

In a new interview, Jonas has explained that he was excited to “push himself” as an actor when he found out he would be playing a gay character.

“My first reaction was genuine excitement at the opportunity to push myself as an actor and play a character with stakes as high as Nate’s, and questions about himself and his sexuality,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I think one of the sexiest things in a person is their acceptance of all people, so I’m thrilled to play him.”
