New ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ writer hints revival show will not be a reboot

The showrunner of the new Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival has hinted that the show will be a sequel and not a reboot.
Last week, it was reported that original Buffy creator Joss Whedon was working with Agents of SHIELD writer Monica Owusu-Breen to create a modern version of the show with an African-American girl as the slayer.
The show was described as a “richly diverse” revival by 20th Century Fox Television, and some fans were quick to slam the idea on the social media, insisting that Buffy shouldn’t be rebooted.
However, Owusu-Breen has since released a statement on Twitter insisting that the revival will actually be a sequel.
In the statement, she said: “For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy The Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars.
“Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay. There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel…
“They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to.”

She added: “But here we are, twenty years later… and the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer… And that’s all I can say.”
Owusu-Breen’s statement seems to hint that the revival will feature an entirely new cast of characters and could potentially be a sequel to the original show, which ran for seven seasons.
The new Buffy show will reportedly be pitched to cable and streaming outlets this summer.
