‘Moonlight’, ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ nominated for MTV Awards

By Ross Semple

The MTV Movie Awards has undergone a transformation.

It’s now the MTV Movie & TV Awards, and the nominations have been announced.

Fresh off its Oscar win for Best Picture, Moonlight is nominated for Best Kiss for the smooch between Chiron and Kevin on the beach, and Tearjerker for the emotional scene between adult Chiron and his mother.

In Attitude’s five-star review of the film, we called Moonlight “essential viewing.

“It’s a film with teeth and it’s a film with a soul. Rooted in our own, often brutal reality, Moonlight awakens in its audience a wider perspective of people, of America, and of the world.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race, which is now available to UK viewers on Netflix the day after it airs in the US, continues its invasion of mainstream culture with two nominations: Best Reality Competition and Best Host. Mama Ru faces stiff competition from Ellen Degeneres, Samantha Bee, Trevor Noah and John Oliver.

The race for Movie of the Year is between Beauty and the Beast, The Edge of Seventeen, Get Out, Logan and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There are six TV shows vying for Show of the Year: Atlanta, Game of Thrones, Insecure, Pretty Little Liars, Stranger Things and This Is Us.

Some of the new categories combine movies and TV shows. The gong for Best Fight Against the System is between films Get Out, Hidden Figures & Loving and TV shows Luke Cage & Mr. Robot.

The awards are decided by a public vote, so head over to MTV to cast your ballot. Unfortunately voting is only open to those in the US.

The show airs on MTV in the US on 7 May. Adam DeVine of Pitch Perfect and Neighbors fame will host the show.
