The sequel received rave reviews from critics and fans alike and won Emily Blunt a Golden Globe nomination

Mary Poppins Returns director is ‘all for’ the future of the franchise focusing on LGBTQ rights.
The original movie saw the iconic nanny, played by Dame Julie Andrews, come to help Mr Banks and his family during the 1910s suffragette movement and in the sequel – released last year – we see an older Jane Banks following her mother’s steps and being a Labour organiser.
Although Emily Blunt took over the role from Andrews – whose iconic performance will never ever be forgotten – the film was widely praised and received rave reviews and Blunt was nominated for a Golden Globe.
Following the success of the Disney sequel, it’s understandable that a third movie in the franchise could be in the works – after all that’s what a giant conglomerate like Disney does.
But Rob Marshall – the openly gay director of Mary Poppins Returns – has said he hopes the future of Mary Poppins lies with LGBTQ rights.
Speaking to the Advocate on a special feature on the DVD and Blu-ray release, Marshall said: “Wouldn’t that’d be great? Please, Lord. That’s exactly what should be happening.
“I’m always so aware of that, being a gay man myself. I mean, our movie takes place in the ’30s.
“But if it were to take place now, that’s exactly what it should be.
“I understand so deeply what it’s like to be on the outskirts and not feel like you are worthy.
“And I will say that kind of passion to explore acceptance in life is something that’s so important. And so, yes, I’d be all for that, for sure.”
Mary Poppins Returns is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
