Looking: The Movie gets TV premiere date

By Fabio Crispim

When we said goodbye to Patrick and his friends at the end of the season 2 of Looking, we were promised a movie to end the life of the show.

And in April we reported that Looking: The Movie is set to get its first public airing on June 26 at San Francisco’s Frameline Film Festival.

But now, for those that can’t make it, HBO have confirmed that the series’ feature-length finale will debut in the US on July 23 at 10pm on HBO.

While the finer points of Looking: The Movie’s plot are thin on the ground, an official synopsis reads: “In the film, Patrick returns to the city for the first time in almost a year to celebrate a momentous event with his old friends. In the process, he must face the unresolved relationships he left behind and make difficult choices about what’s important to him.”

Show star Russell Tovey previously confirmed after his initial read of the script and that “lucky” viewers were in for a treat – while Jonathan Groff recently revealed exactly what sex acts he’s been filming for the finale.

HBO president Michael Lombardo previously admitted the decision to axe Looking at the conclusion of season 2 last year “very painful” for him on “a personal level”.

He explained: “I thought the show, creatively, was really doing something that I hadn’t seen on any other show, particularly dealing with gay lives.

“As a gay man, in particular, I was very proud that there was a show that felt like it was dealing very honestly and openly with gay men and their lives, without putting them into a comedic mode.”

There’s no word yet on a UK air date for Looking: The Movie, but the film is likely to be broadcast on Sky Atlantic, which was the show’s British home for its initial run between 2014-2015.

Looking: The Movie airs in the US on July 23 at 10pm on HBO.
