The book sold 180,000 copies within two days of its release on Amazon
John Oliver’s gay parody of Mike Pence’s children’s book has outsold the original on Amazon.
The Christian fundamentalist politician released his children’s book on Monday (March 19) based on the adventures of his family’s pet rabbit, titled Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President.
However, on his Last Week Tonight show, comedian John Oliver announced the release of his gay parody of Pence’s book, which sees Marlon Bundo falling in love with another boy rabbit called Wesley.
Oliver’s book was published the day before Pence’s on Sunday (March 18) and it outsold the original within two days of its release, the Guardian reports.
The book sold 180,000 copies on Amazon and topped the bestselling list on the website while the original version, written by Pence’s daughter Charlotte and illustrated by his wife Karen, sat at number four.
Proceeds from Oliver’s book will go to LGBT charities The Trevor Project and AIDS United, while stars such as RuPaul, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) Jim Parson (The Big Bang Theory) and Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) have lined up to record a special audiobook edition.
On Sunday, Oliver had urged fans to buy a copy of his parody book, stating that selling more than Pence would “really p*ss him off”.
