Jake Shears serves fierce funk-pop on new single ‘Meltdown’

The Masked Singer's Unicorn is running free once again.

By Will Stroude

After being unmasked on The Masked Singer a couple of weeks back, Jake Shears has wasted no time getting back to non-unicorn music with his stellar new single ‘Meltdown’.

The former Scissor Sisters frontman, who’s set to headline Blackpool Pride this summer following his appearance on the bonkers ITV singing competition, dropped the ’70s-styled funk banger on Friday (14 February).

“I wrote ‘Meltdown’ on the hottest day of the summer in New York City,” says former Attitude cover star Shears, 41.

“It’s a compact little jam born from inspiration in the moment. In a way, it is a tribute to one of the biggest queer music pioneers, Sylvester, who has also been a major vocal and spiritual touchstone for me.

“You can also hear sprinkles of Hot Chip, Cerrone, Prince and The Presets. ‘Meltdown’ is also a hint of the Sinister Dystopian Dance Pop to come. Let’s call it the SDDP for now.”

“Whatever the case, get ready to put on your boogie-hooves.”
