Is BBC One’s Christmas promo the most diverse ever?

By Will Stroude

BBC One’s Christmas promo advert might just be the most diverse ever. Features all types of people – including a gay couple kissing under mistletoe at a Christmas party – it even ends with the words: “For the moments we share… One-ness.”

The promotion starts with an army of Santas taking part in a fun run, then a group of school pupils is seen sliding down a hill on a sledge, followed by people getting ready for different Christmas celebrations.

A few viewers have criticised the BBC  for “over-representing gay and mixed-race relationships,” but most of the comments on YouTube have been positive.

One user said: “I understand that some people hate the ‘forced political correctness’ but [we] need to understand that representation seems forced because we are not used to it, so it feels jarring. Give it time and we will barely bat an eyelid at two men kissing. I can’t wait for that time to arrive.”

Another wrote: “It’s not political correctness. It’s just real life. It’s a nice festive trailer.”

The promo features a cover of ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’, sung by Lucy Rose.
