The pianist was one of five performers battling it out on a special edition of The Late Late Show last night (February 27).

Panel member Panti Bliss backed Molly, declaring “this is the song for me”, while songwriter Phil Coulter praised her as a “major talent”.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio this morning, Sterling said: “I’m still walking around this morning going, ‘What’s happened?’. My family still don’t know what’s going on either.

“I don’t remember anything from the green room when the announcement was made to the performance, it’s crazy.”

Ireland, who failed to qualify for the final last year, will compete in the second semi-final on May 21.

The BBC will announce the United Kingdom’s entry next Saturday (March 7) on a special Red Button programme.
