Tales of the City stars old and new turned out in force on Monday night (3 June) for the New York premiere of the Netflix’s eagerly-anticipated new drama series.

Original show stars Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis and Barbara Garrick were joined by series newcomers including Ellen Page, current Attitude cover star Murray Bartlett and former Girls actress Zosia Mamet at Metrograph in New York’s Lower East Side.

Netflix’s 10-part revival of the Tales series, which hits Netflix this Friday 7 June, sees Mary Ann Singleton (Linney) return to San Francisco’s 28 Barbary Lane two decades after leaving to pursue a career on the East Coast.

While not a direct adaptation of Maupin’s later Tales novels, the series does feature book characters including Mary Ann’s adoptive daughter Shawna (Page) alongside a diverse cast of original characters, including trainee nurse Jake (played by transender actor Garcia) and girlfriend Margot (May Hong), who is struggling to adjust to her boyfriend’s transition.

Speaking in Attitude’s July issue – available to download and to order globally now – Murray Bartlett says the new Tales is designed for fans old and new.

“The new series is made for the people who have followed the series before, but also — hopefully — for a new generation of people who will come to this world,” he says.

The former Looking star adds “It’s a beautiful statement about what community can be and how diverse it can be, in terms of age, sexuality and gender identity.
