Ian McKellen’s ‘Vicious’ ‘went down better’ in US, says creator

The creator of Vicious says that the sitcom was better received in the US because audiences weren’t as familiar with its stars, Sir Ian McKellan and Derek Jacobi.
The series, which received a mixed critical reception upon its debut on ITV1 last year (2013), stars legendary British actors Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi as an elderly gay couple living in London,
The show’s creator, Gary Janetti, has argued that the sitcom gets more viewers in the US because McKellen and Jacobi are seen as less serious actors across the pond.
“Actually, it went down better than in the UK,” Janetti told The Hollywood Reporter, suggesting that the pair have “less baggage” in the US where they aren’t as well known for their respected film and stage work.
Janetti also discussed the show’s upcoming second series and teased details of his long term plans for the show.
“We’ll be shooting each Sunday there for the next couple of months, with a break for Christmas,” said the creator, before going on to hint that the new series won’t be the last, saying: “I always saw it as three seasons.”
Series two of Vicious is set to air in 2015.
