She shot to fame earlier this year in one of the most critically-acclaimed TV shows in recent memory – so it was only fitting that we asked Yasmin Finney to share her top culture picks with us last night.
Catching up with Attitude at the Soho House Awards in London on Thursday night (1 September), the 19-year-old said of the content she’s binge-watching at the moment: “I’m quite liking The Sandman on Netflix. I’m obsessed.”
Yas added of non-binary actor Mason Alexander Park’s portrayal of their character, Desire [pictured top, right]: “So sexy, so chic, so queer, so feminine – I love that. I’d love to play a role like Desire!”
“I cried when I watched Paris Is Burning“
Asked for TV shows and films she’d recommend to LGBTQs, the Heartstopper star pointed to “Orange Is the New Black, which I loved – it was so original, super fun and I just love Laverne Cox” and “Paris Is Burning: super, super throwback. I watched that when I was, like, 15. I cried. And Disclosure‘s really good.”
Speaking at 180 House, she continued: “These are the shows [and films] that will educate you, if you need an education about the community.”
Yasmin, who has also been cast in the next series of Doctor Who, took home the Breakthrough Actress award at last night’s ceremony, which honoured emerging talent in the creative industries. This follows her Attitude Pride Award win last month – “I cried; it was a moment: my first ever award!” – which she told us she’s being keeping close to hand ever since.
“I’ve been bringing it everywhere with me – it’s in my bag, even though it’s quite heavy!” she giggled.
