Ghostbusters director confirms character’s sexuality
The all-female reboot of Ghostbusters has been receiving mixed reviews since it premiered in Los Angeles on July 9.
But in an interview with the Daily Beast, the films director Paul Feig revealed some new information about main character Jillian Holtzmann, played by Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon.
When asked whether the character is gay, Feig, who directed 2011 smash Bridesmaids replied “what do you think” and, according to the interview, gave a “grinning, silent nod”.
He continued to say, “I hate to be coy about it, but when you’re dealing with the studios and that kind of thing…” hinting that production studio Sony may have kept him from referencing Holtzmann’s sexuality explicitly in the film.
About actress McKinnon, who’s performance was well received in a number of reviews, Feig said “if you know Kate at all she’s this kind of pansexual beast where it’s just like everybody who’s around her falls in love with her and she’s so loving to everybody she’s around.”
I wanted to let that come out in this character.”
McKinnon joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2012, and is the first gay woman to be out while being part of the show’s cast in its 41-year history.
