Gay drama ‘Call Me By Your Name’ wins at 2018 Oscars
The acclaimed gay drama was nominated for four Oscars
Acclaimed gay drama Call Me By Your Name won at the 90th Academy Awards last night (March 4).
The film, an adaptation of Andre Aciman’s 2007 novel of the same name, tells the story of the relationship between 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and graduate student Oliver (Armie Hammer) in 1980s Italy.
It earned four Oscar nominations and screenwriter James Ivory, 89, picked up his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film and became the oldest Oscar winner in Academy Award history.
Ivory, who wore a shirt emblazoned with Timothee Chalamet’s face on at the event, made a moving speech while accepting the award, describing Call Me By Your Name as “A story familiar to most of us whether we are straight or gay or somewhere in between.”
“We’ve all gone through first love, I hope, and come out the other side mostly intact. Though maybe not without the benefit of loving parents like the Pearlmans in this film.”
Ivory also described adapting the story of young love as a “rejuvenating experience.”
In addition to Best Adapted Screenplay, Call Me By Your Name was nominated for Best Actor for Timothee Chalamet, Best Picture and Best Original Song ‘Mystery of Love’.
Meanwhile, Chilean drama film A Fantastic Woman, which tells the story of a transgender woman who fights to be accepted by her dead lover’s family, landed an Oscar for Foreign Language Film.
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape Of Water stormed the event and won Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Score and Production Design. Horror flick Get Out won Best Original Screenplay and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri scooped up Oscars for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
