Actress Gabourey Sidibe has revealed that she always wanted to play a lesbian before landing her role in Life Partners.

The Precious star appears alongside Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester in the Tribeca Film Festival movie.

She told Out: “I just really wanted to play a lesbian, which I guess is sort of nerdy. My best friend in the entire world is a lesbian and I just thought it would be fun.”

However, she realised once she started work on the film that it was wrong of her to approach gay and straight roles differently.

“Once I showed up in this role, I realised actually how playing a lesbian is not different,” she explained. “It’s all about the story, and it’s the same thing. It’s the same as playing a straight person. But I really did like it, because this character got to be a little bit of a pimp.”

The 30-year-old went on to name Amy Poehler and Tina Fey as the women she would most like to marry.

Life Partners screens this week in New York at the Tribeca Film Festival.
