‘Doctor Who’ lesbian kiss attracts Ofcom complaints
By Sam Rigby
has received Ofcom complaints after featuring a lesbian kiss in last Saturday’s (August 23) episode.
The scene – which saw lizard woman (a.k.a Silurian) Madame Vastra kiss her human wife Jenny – has been described as “unnecessary” and “gratuitous” by some viewers, according to The Independent.
The kiss occurred when the couple came under threat from killer droids, who sensed life forms from breathing. Whilst hiding from the enemy, the couple were forced to hold their breath, but when Jenny struggled Madame Vastra kissed her to help her avoid detection.
Some accused Doctor Who‘s head writer Steven Moffat of having a “blatant gay agenda” due to the contrived nature of the kiss.
Six viewers have so far lodged complaints with Ofcom, meaning it is unlikely that an investigation will be launched by the watchdog.
Saturday’s episode was also the full-length debut for Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, who stars in the new series alongside companion Jenna Coleman.
The episodes will also feature new part-time companion Danny Pink, who is played by Samuel Anderson – read more here.
Doctor Who continues on Saturday (August 30) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
