Diplo: ‘Madonna’s ‘Ghosttown’ would’ve been #1 for anyone else’

By Will Stroude

Diplo has defended Madonna against the backlash she’s been facing of late, saying that people no longer wanted her to succeed in the industry because of her age and sex.

The American DJ and producer, who worked on Living for Love, Unapologetic Bitch and current single Bitch I’m Madonna for Madge’s latest album Rebel Heart, said that her last single Ghosttown – which peaked at Number 117 on the UK Singles Chart earlier this year – would have been a Number One record for any other female artist.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about working with the musical icon, Diplo said: “She created the world we live in. It already sucks to be a woman in the music industry, but to be a boss woman is even harder. She sold out her tour in minutes, but no one seems to want her to succeed – “Madonna, we’ve been there, done that, now we’re about Kim Kardashian.

“Her song Ghosttown was a guaranteed Number One for anybody else, but she didn’t get a fair shot. With Bitch I’m Madonna, everyone said there’s no way it will go anywhere, but I’m like, “Screw it, it represents you more than anything.”

Well said Diplo. Does the #JusticeForGhosttown campaign start here?

Either way, it seems like the 36-year-old has got Madge’s back more than fellow Rebel Heart producer Avicii, who last month appeared to throw a wee bit o’ shade at the the songs he worked on for the record – click here to find out more.

Meanwhile, Madonna has begun teasing the setlist for her upcoming Rebel Heart tour, and it looks like there are some surprising choices in store.
