Demi Lovato has criticised Lady Gaga’s performance at South By Southwest (SXSW), telling fans that “eating disorders are not art”.

Gaga performed a set at the US music festival on Thursday night (March 13), during which she was spit-roasted, groped and even vomited on by a backing dancer who appeared to stick her fingers down her throat before bringing up a neon green liquid.

Heart Attack singer Lovato took to Twitter to voice her disapproval earlier today (March 15), writing: “Sad… As if we didn’t have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already. Bottom line, it’s not “cool” or “artsy” at all. Would you let someone bring a needle and shoot up on you? Addiction is addiction.”

She added later: “So it’s cool if I do a speech about self-harm and then proceed to watch someone cut themselves on my stage?”

Shortly after tweeting her criticism of Gaga’s performance, and receiving a flurry of angry tweets from the singer’s notoriously loyal fans, Lovato told her followers that her disappointment was not “shade”.

She said: “@LadyGaga you’re so talented, if not one of the most talented in the industry PERIOD. Dope is INCREDIBLE…but you don’t have to do that.”

“Ps I’m still a little monster myself.”

Lovato has suffered from bulimia in the past, and entered rehab back in 2010 to seek treatment for various issues including alcohol and drug addictions.
