Country singer Cameron Hawthorn comes out as gay in new music video – WATCH

The rising star's new single 'Dancing in the Living Room' is a moving ode to the one you love.

While there’s been a long-overdue increase in the number of out musicians gracing the pop charts in recent years, there’s one musical genre that remains comparatively conservative when it comes to embracing change: country music.

Thankfully, a new generation of country artists are slowly proving that there’s space for all in their cowboy-booted world, and now rising star Cameron Hawthorn can add his name to those ranks.

The Kansas-raised singer has used the video for his sentimental new single ‘Dancing in the Living Room’ not only to celebrate love of all kinds, but to come out publicly as gay, too.

The video, released on Friday (8 March), sees Cameron intimately slow-dancing with a guy at home, in a touching moment that’s bouind to reverberate far and beyond their, well, living room.

Hawthorn told The Advocate: “I remember always thinking how special it was to dance freely with my boyfriend in the living room of our apartment — being gay, it’s not as easy to dance as a couple in public together as it is for a straight couple.

“I wanted to express how special that moment is for a couple, when it’s just the two of you in the privacy of your own four walls.”
