Cher and Meryl Streep once saved a woman from being assaulted

The 'Mamma Mia 2' star recalled how she and Meryl Streep managed to scare off a woman's attacker in New York

Cher has revealed that she and Meryl Streep once saved a woman from being assaulted.

The pop icon dropped by The Late Late Show With James Corden this week during the promotional tour for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and discussed her relationship with long-time friend Meryl Streep.

The actress and singer explained that it happened back in 1980s New York, shortly after Streep had given birth to second child Mamie Gummer.

Cher said: “We were downtown at her apartment, and she said, ‘I want some ice cream’ and I said, ‘OK.’”

She continued: “I said, ‘Isn’t it dangerous down here?’ And she said, ‘No no, it’s Little Italy on one side and Chinatown on the other side and we’ll be safe as two peas in a pod.’

“So we walk out and the first thing we see is some guy hitting cars with a brick. And then we walk down the street and we hear screaming. And we come around the corner, and this gigantic man is ripping the clothes off of this girl.”

Cher then explained how she and Streep screamed and ran at the man, who responded by running back at them.

“And just out of – I don’t know – we split and he ran through us. And we went up to the girl, and all of her clothes were torn and she was clutching her bag.

“So we’re putting her together, kind of trying to get her to look a little bit like she hasn’t just been ravaged, and she looks at us and she goes, ‘Oh my God! I was saved by Meryl Streep and Cher! I’m an actress, and I work in a café where we sing, and all my friends are going to be so jealous.’”

Meanwhile, Cher agreed to eat a cow’s tongue on the show after being unable to say one nice thing about President Donald Trump.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again hits UK cinemas on July 20 and will star Amanda Seyfried as Sophie Sheridan, Meryl Streep as Sophie’s mother Donna Sheridan Carmichael and Cher as Ruby Sheridan, Sophie’s grandmother and Donna’s mother.
