‘Charmed’ reboot officially casts its first lead

It's time to meet the first sister of CW's fantasy reboot

The Charmed reboot has finally cast one of its three lead sisters.

Described as a “fierce, funny and feminist” reboot of the original series, CW’s take on the fantasy show takes place in present time and centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they’re witches.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, producers of the show have now cast Melonie Diaz as one of the Charmed sisters. Diaz will play Mel, a “strong-willed feminist” who becomes angry and “defiantly unkempt” in the wake of a tragic accident.

Character descriptions from TVLine previously revealed that Mel’s character will be lesbian, though her girlfriend Detective Soo Jin has yet to be cast.

Diaz’s acting credits include films The Belko Experiment, Fruitvale Station and Amazon’s GringoShe’s also appeared in TV shows Room 104, Girls and Nip/Tuck.

The news comes after Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle star Ser’Darius Blain landed the role of Gavin, one of the other sisters’ love interests.

Casting is set to continue as the CW Network search to find sisters Macy and Madison as well as Mel’s detective girlfriend, Madison’s ex-boyfriend Brian and the trio’s “handsome” Whitelighter, Harry.

The reboot, written by Jane The Virgin writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, was criticised by original Charmed star Holly Marie Combs in an epic social media rant last month after the show was announced.
