The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) fan favourite Janusz Domagala secretly wore a Progress Pride flag throughout his time on the competition.

After being eliminated in the semi-final this week the openly gay Polish baker posted an image on Twitter showing that he had worn a different colour of the flag every week.

From 2012’s winner John Whaite to 2013 finalist Ruby Tandoh to 2019’s Michael Chakraverty, Bake Off has been a hub for queer people on TV and Domagala is the latest to win our hearts.

“I DID IT! Being chubby, gay and the first Polish national contestant on GBBO I knew had a lot to represent walking into the tent,” Domagala tweeted on Tuesday (8 November)

“I wanted to do this by being myself but also set myself a little challenge to wear a colour of the pride flag each week and hope that I could tick them all off!” the 34-year-old baker explained. “I love being able to be a part of so many different communities and Great Britain is a home that’s allowed me to do that.”

Domagala addresses the fans who loved his appearance on the show: “Thank you SO much for taking me in and embracing me and for the love, support and fun over the last 9 weeks and thank you to every person who was in that tent on and behind the camera with me who became family! Janusz has left the tent.”

On the show, Domagala struck up a close friendship with fellow gay contestant Sandro.

While it had been a predominantly wholesome season, Domagala presented seven instead of eight spring rolls for judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood in the quarter-final technical challenge – the drama!

While Janusz insists he made eight he went on to Instagram on Wednesday (2 November) to post a statement parodying recent Tory government turbulence.

Many fans shared their love for Domagala online following his recent elimination: “Ahhhh I’m gutted I loved seeing all your beautiful, colourful baking creations each week!! Well done for reaching the semi-final, you should be very proud of what you achieved in the tent.”

Another wrote “the people’s prince, the drip cake darling, forever in our hearts” with the Progress Pride rainbow of heart emojis.

The Great British Bake Off finale is on Channel 4 on 15 November at 8 pm.
