Ariana Grande left emotional in first interview since Manchester Arena bombing
The No Tears Left To Cry singer revealed the title and release date of her new album
Ariana Grande has appeared in her first interview since the Manchester bombings last year.
The 24-year-old singer dropped by Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show for the TV debut of her latest single ‘No Tears Left To Cry’, marking her first interview since the Manchester bombing last May.
The deadly terror attack saw 22 people die after her concert at Manchester Arena, including 2017’s Attitude Pride Award winner Martyn Hett. The singer returned to the city less than two weeks later to perform at the One Love concert but hasn’t done an interview since.
Grande herself didn’t address the attack during the interview. Instead, it was Fallon who discussed the Manchester bombing, thanking Grande for her courage.
He said: “I know it’s tough for everybody, tough for fans and tough for you, and I know you haven’t done any interviews, and I understand that.
“I just want to say thank you so much for coming on the show and for being strong and for entertaining and for showing up and going back to Manchester and doing a benefit. I thought that was awesome of you. I just think you’re so strong and so cool.”
An emotional Grande replied: “Thanks. Thank you.”
During the interview, the singer also announced that her upcoming album, due for a release this summer, was called Sweetener. As the audience cheered, Grande joked that she had been “away too long.”
When asked what the title meant, Grande explained that it’s “about bringing light to a situation, or to someone’s life, or somebody else who brings light to your life, or sweetening the situation”.
She also revealed she’ll be doing something “special” every 20th up to the album’s release.
