Andrew Garfield wants a pansexual Spider-Man

By Will Stroude

Andrew Garfield has revealed he’s looking forward to a point in time where audiences can have a ‘pansexual Spider-Man’ and not bat an eyelid.

The Amazing Spiderman star has revealed he doesn’t “give a shit about the sexual preference” of the web-slinging superhero, after Sony documents leaked earlier his year revealed that film studios have explicitly stated that the man behind the mask, Peter Parker, must always be white and heterosexual.

“I’m excited to get to the point where we don’t have to have this conversation, where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man,” Garfield told Mic.

“The richness of the world we’re in, the diversity of the world we’re in; you look at the animal kingdom and you see it reflected. You look all over.”

He continued: “We’re scared of things that aren’t us. Love is love. Skin is skin. Flesh is flesh. We’re all wrapped in the same thing. I have no preference.”

“What are we so scared of? Why are we so ‘no, it has to be this way, a man and a woman.’ Why is that even a conversation?”

It’s not the first time Garfield has broached the idea of Peter Parker exploring his sexuality. Back in 2013, the 32-year-old revealed he had pitched the idea of casting a man in the tole of Peter’s iconic love interest Mary Jane ahead of filming The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time.

“And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?” Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?  It’s hardly even groundbreaking!

“So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

In fairness, Garfield did get to live out his wish to some extent last year, after locking lips with Coldplay’s Chris Martin while dressed as Spidey for a wish-fulfilling Saturday Night Live skit – check it out here.
