Well-known US actor John Carroll Lynch has signed up to play a villain in American Horror Story: Freak Show.

American Horror Story’s executive producer Tim Minear made the announcement during the show’s Comic-Con 2014 panel in San Diego yesterday (July 26).

Lynch, known for his role on TV’s The Drew Carey Show and Body of Proof, plus film appearances in Fargo and Shutter Island, will play one of the central villains in the upcoming fourth season of the horror anthology show from Ryan Murphy.

“It will scare the shit out of you,” said the actor of the new season, adding that Freak Show is “not like the first three” seasons.

In Freak Show, long-running American Horror Story star Jessica Lange will play a German expat managing one of America’s very last freak shows – and her gaggle of “freaks” will include show favourites Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Frances Conroy.

The fourth season will be the last to feature Lange, and will debut this autumn on US cable network FX. In the UK, the show airs on the FOX channel.

Meanwhile, Neil Patrick Harris has expressed interest in joining the American Horror Story cast – read the full story here.
