The Umbrella Academy actor, Elliot Page, has unveiled his upcoming memoir, Pageboy.

The 35-year-old actor, who came out as trans in 2020, displayed the cover on Instagram on Monday (5 December)

“Writing a book has come up a few times over the years, but it never felt right and quite frankly, it didn’t feel possible,” Elliot says in the caption.

He describes being able to “barely sit still,” at times “let alone focus long enough to complete such a task.”

Continuing he says, “So, I’ve written a book about my story. It’s out next June, and I’m so excited to share its cover with you now.”

He says that it’s often felt “unbearable” to be in front of the camera, but working with photographer Catherine Opie, who helped make the book’s cover, “was a joyful experience that I will never forget.”

The cover sees Elliot posed simply against a red backdrop and dressed in jeans and a white tank top with a chain around his neck.

On a poignant note, Elliot touches on the increasingly hostile anti-LGBTQ atmosphere in the US and around the world.

“Trans people are facing increasing attacks, from physical violence to the banning of healthcare, and our humanity is regularly “debated” in the media. The act of writing, reading, and sharing the multitude of our experiences is an important step in standing up to those who wish to silence and harm us.

“Books have helped me, saved me even, so I hope this can help someone feel less alone, feel seen, no matter who they are or what path they are on,” he closes.

A short blurb for the book says the book will include behind-the-scenes details and discussions of sex, love, trauma, and Hollywood.

Pageboy is the story of a life pushed to the brink. But at its core, this beautifully written, winding journey of what it means to untangle ourselves from the expectations of others is an ode to stepping into who we truly are with defiance, strength, and joy,” the book’s website reads.

Earlier this year, Elliot revealed that transitioning had “drastically” improved his life. Speaking to Seth Meyers the actor said: “I think it’s made me better in so many facets. As a person, as a friend, and in relationships.

“It’s improved my life drastically and I hope that people who do have an issue with me could try and hear that and embrace that on some level.”

After Elliot came out as trans it was announced that his character on Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy would also transition.

Pageboy available from 6 June 2023. You can pre-order it here.
