The ultimate chocolate protein sundae
Promotional feature
Protein really is a multi-talented nutrient.
On the one hand, it can help you build bigger arms and a bullet-proof chest as it fulfils its much-publicised function of helping the muscles repair and regrow. On the other, it can help you carve out a six-pack: according to research published in the Journal of American College Nutrition, it can help you burn calories merely through digestion.
This is reason enough to make sure you get enough quality protein in your diet. But just how much do we need? The Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition says we need 1.7g of protein per kg of bodyweight. Unfortunately, that’s a lot of hard boiled eggs and cans of tuna.
Never fear, salvation is at hand, and it comes in the form of the Ultimate Chocolate Protein Sundae: A rich, crumbly, chocolate brownie base that’s rich in BCAAs, blended with a choice of smooth natural yoghurt or quark.
Protein Brownie Base (Ingredients):
60g chocolate Silk Whey Protein (we of course use The Protein Works™)
100g unsalted butter
10g coconut oil
200g dark chocolate (I use 85 per cent cocoa from Hotel Chocolat)
3 large eggs
1 tbsp almond butter
3 tbsp cocoa powder
110g gluten free all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
½ tps xatham gum
75g all-purpose powdered sweetener
½ tsp cinnamon
Protein Brownie (Method):
Line a 20cm x 20cm baking tin with grease proof paper and set – Oven to 190⁰C.
Place Butter, coconut oil, almond butter and chocolate onto heated Bain Marie and stir until melted.
Remove from heat, wait until cooled slightly and stir in powdered sugar and eggs.
Sieve into the bowl all dry ingredients and stir until fully combined.
Pour the chocolate brownie batter into the baking tin and place in the oven for approximately 20 minutes or until surface has baked.
Wait until cooled slightly
Break into a crumble and then put into a glass with natural yoghurt or quark
As a final tip, the above recipe has a very rich, strong taste and texture. Therefore supplements that your body loves but your taste buds might not can be easily incorporated into the mix. For instance the taste of creatine can easily be masked by including 5g in this recipe.
