Style Icon: The Heathers (original Mean Girls)

By Joseph Kocharian

WHO?The Heathers

The original Mean Girls, the Heathers were the incredibly well dressed (and wealthy) clique that Winona Ryder and Christian Slater systematically sent six feet under. These blow-dried beauties were so influential, they even made croquet a thing. Their look is unashamedly ’80s and whilst they may no longer be with us (R.I.P) their legacy remains.

THE LOOK
If you want to be in their gang, you’re going to have to find a blazer with a Prince of Wales check for start. Go for a tailoring in primary colours (we recommend traffic light red, yellow or green) – oh, and you also have to change your name to Heather, it’s a small sacrifice.

WHY NOW?
Pretty much everyone is in on the check trend  this season – from fashion and heritage brands to high street. Versace has gone for the Prince of Wales check, whilst Gucci has both bold bright colours and modern checks in its collection. Most importantly, everyone loves a bit of the ’80s, even if it’s a guilty pleasure.

GET THE LOOK
Have your crisp white shirt ironed and your knee high socks pulled up. River Island provide brilliantly bright colour suits and a smorgasbord of checks. MR PORTER is an excellent bet for pocket squares and brooches to make you Heather number one  (you don’t want to be a minion Heather now, do you?)
