After all the controversy about whether to ban Germaine Greer form speaking at Cardiff University, students at Brunel University have shown that there’s another way to deal with people who espouse heinous views – simply walk out on them.

Footage has emerged of students at the London university staging a mass walk-out after controversial columnist and professional controversy-baiter Katie Hopkins began speaking at a debate about the future of the welfare state yesterday (November 26).

The former Apprentice star, who’s been accused of homophobia, racism and misogyny in the past, came under fire again last week after questioning “just how wide” the gulf is between ‘mainstream’ Muslims and “ISIS stalwarts throwing gay men from buildings or emptying Kalashnikov’s into the crowds.”

Brunel’s student union president Ali Milani said yesterday’s protest made him “especially proud to be a part of Brunel“.

Responding to the embarrassing incident in her latest Daily Mail column, Hopkins accused the students of “looking to silence anyone with an alternative view” – something she said is also “typical” of the LGBT community.

“A terrifying number [of students] conform to one way of thinking. Not only do they demand that you comply with their view, but seek to deride and delegitimise anyone with an alternative opinion”, she wrote.

“And it’s not just students. Remember the argument between Elton John and Dolce & Gabbana earlier this year over the use of IVF for gay couples? Dolce & Gabbana were not supportive of the process.

“The response from the LGBT community was typical: Boycott Dolce & Gabbana. Don’t debate the issue – label it and shut it down. Those preaching tolerance suddenly became the most intolerant of them all.”
