Ugandan President: ‘Gays are disgusting’
By Nick Levine

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has branded gay people “disgusting”
Earlier today (February 24) Museveni signed an anti-gay bill on live television. The bill means that gay people could face life imprisonment if they repeatedly break the law against homosexuality.
The bill also means it is illegal to ‘promote’ homosexuality, and will also apply to those who reach out to gay and lesbian people in the country.
During an interview with CNN that took place after he signed the bill, Museveni was asked for his opinion on gay people, and replied: “They’re disgusting. What sort of people are they?
“I never knew what they were doing. I’ve been told recently that what they do is terrible. Disgusting. But I was ready to ignore that if there was proof that that’s how he is born, abnormal. But now the proof is not there.”
Museveni also responded to human rights groups who have denounced the bill, as well as President Obama, who has called it “more than an affront and a danger to the gay community in Uganda”.
“Respect African societies and their values,” Museveni said in response. “If you don’t agree, just keep quiet. Let us manage our society, then we will see. If we are wrong, we shall find out by ourselves, just the way we don’t interfere with yours.”
The former Archbishop of Cape Town, Desmond Tutu, has condemned Uganda’s anti-gay law, saying that it is as evil as Nazism and Apartheid.
